How to calculate Texas Holdem odds
In this article I will present the basic principle in calculating odds. You are welcome to visit my Texas Holdem odds calculator page for more elaborated information. So how do we start?
The first thing you need to understand about calculating odds in Texas Hold"em poker is that basic mathematical skills, a good understanding in probability and a good memory are required. Don"t worry if you don"t consider your self as having these skills. You can easily obtain them after giving it a try your self for a couple of times.
Pot odds:
Pot odds are the odds for earning in this Texas Holdem hand. Calculate the gambling sum that is already on the table. Add the amount of money we predict the other players are going to put in this round, (after we put our bet). Take this sum and divide it by the amount of money we will have to put in we want to match the other players betting. For example, if there were 10$ put till now and we need to put in 2$ to call the bid, then our chances are 2 to 10. Meaning for every 2$ we put in, we have the chance to win 10$. Every time there"s a change in the amount on the table we have to recalculate our pot odds.
Outs
"Outs" are the tool that we are using for calculating our odds. It comes from the word ň€“ "outside" and you will soon understand the connection. We start with a total of 47 outs in a flop. Every card in the pack that we can"t see it considered as a possible option. These cards are called "Outs".
For example, if you have a king and an Ace. Since there are 4 kings in the pack and 4 aces and we know about one king and one ace. This means we have 6 possible option, or 6 "outs".Ň The odds are now 6/47. This means you have about 19% to take this hand and you opponents have all together about 80% of taking the hand. After the first round another card is opened in the middle and now we have to recalculate the odds for a hand. If the new card was not a king or an Ace then we need to change our odds to 6/46 and so on.
The final calculation of our Texas Holdem odds is a combination between the pot odds and the outs. Only then we can make a realistic decision about whether to fold or match the bets all the way.
