The Museum of Contemporary Fine Arts.

One of the youngest museums of the Republic of Belarus The Museum of Contemporary Fine Arts was founded in October 1997. The necessity to create such an organization appeared quite long ago and in the middle 80-ies the first steps in this direction were done. Professor V.P.Sharangovitch, National Artist of Belarus, became the Director of the Museum. Vasili Sharangovich was a tutor, teacher, the Head of the Alma Mater (Byelorussian Academy of Arts) for many generations of Byelorussian artists.
Creation of a new type of Museum, which would serve as a cultural and information center, where contemporary art deeds would not only be reflected but also analyzed, bared an idea of art search and art critics search. Thus the main directions of the Museum activity were defined. These were the collection raise, exploration of the contemporary art itself in all the varieties of its developments and style directions and forms, holding conferences and forums, creation of a videolibrary and information database, realization of a range of other projects.
Opening of the Museums exposition halls in May, 1998 as well as the first exposition prepared by the Museum staff called The New Collection was not only the first activity of the Museum of Contemporary Byelorussian Fine Arts but was a sort of the Museum presentation to the wide public opinion as well. This collection counts more than 1500 pieces of art at the present moment. The collection, definitely, cannot pretend to be a complete reflection of all the styles and directions in the Byelorussian fine arts but it represents a very broad specter of art search and the tendencies in the modern situation in art in the Republic of Belarus.
During it's short existence the Museum presented exhibitions in cities and towns of Belarus as well as exposited pieces of art from its collection abroad. At the same time it hosted wide range of exhibitions from Russia, the Ukraine, Taiwan, Mexico, Yugoslavia, Germany, Poland, Great Britain, USA.
Obviously that the contemporary Byelorussian art is not self-based. Possessing a view on it in the context of the world art process the Museum plans to broaden creative contacts as with other museums, research centers and Galleries of Belarus as well as with organizations of the kind in the CIS and far abroad.
